What's inside

  • A monthly log for two years, with columns for cash, investments, retirement accounts, your home and other assets, and your mortgage, loans and cards.
  • Net worth and the change since last month, calculated for you. Drops show in red.
  • A chart of your net worth over time.
  • Headline figures: net worth now, total change and months tracked.

How to use it

  1. Download the file and open it in Excel, or upload it to Google Drive and open it with Google Sheets.
  2. Replace the three example months with your own balances. Use today's market value, not what you paid.
  3. Add a new row on the same day each month. It takes five minutes with your bank and loan apps open.
  4. Look at the trend, not the single month: markets move, but the line should rise over time.

What is net worth?

Net worth = everything you own − everything you owe

It's the single best number for tracking your overall financial progress, because it captures saving, investing and paying off debt all at once. Paying $500 off a loan raises your net worth just as surely as saving $500.

Curious how you compare? The Federal Reserve's latest Survey of Consumer Finances puts the median net worth of U.S. families at about $193,000 (2022). See the median for your age with our free net worth calculator.

Questions people ask

Should I include my home and car?

Yes, at what they'd sell for today, with the mortgage and car loan on the debt side. Just remember home equity isn't money you can spend, and cars lose value every year.

How often should I update it?

Monthly is plenty. Some people prefer quarterly. What matters is doing it on a regular schedule, the same way each time.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no email needed. It's yours for personal use.
