How Ohio taxes your paycheck
2026 is the first year of Ohio's flat income tax, set by the 2025 state budget. There is no tax on the first $26,050 of taxable income. Above that, the tax is a fixed $332 plus 2.75% of the amount over $26,050, so it jumps by $332 as taxable income crosses the line.
Ohio has no standard deduction. Instead each person on the return gets an exemption whose size depends on income: $2,400 with modified AGI up to $40,000, $2,150 up to $80,000, $1,900 above that, and none at $500,000 or more. Most Ohioans also pay a city income tax, which is often bigger than the state tax.
2026 Ohio tax brackets: all filing statuses
| Taxable income | Rate |
|---|---|
| $0 to $26,050 | 0% |
| Over $26,050 | $332 + 2.75% of the amount over $26,050 |
- Personal exemption: up to $2,400 single, $4,800 married filing jointly and $2,400 head of household, taken off income before tax. It shrinks or ends at higher incomes, as above.
Worked example
You earn $75,000 a year in Ohio, file single and are paid every two weeks. Federal income tax is $7,670 and Social Security and Medicare $5,738, the same in every state.
Ohio taxes $72,850 of it, for $1,619 of state income tax. You keep $59,974 a year, or $2,306.67 per paycheck: $1,619 a year less than in a state with no income tax.
The same salary takes home $59,238 in Pennsylvania and $58,656 in Michigan.

Things to know
- City and school district income tax. Most cities and villages tax wages, typically 1% to 2.5%, and around 200 school districts add their own tax on residents. City tax applies to wages before 401(k) deferrals. Enter your city's rate above.
- Where you work and where you live. The city you work in withholds its tax; your home city may tax you too, usually with a full or partial credit for the work city's tax. The rate to enter is what you pay in total.
- Withholding may run high this year. Ohio's 2026 withholding tables haven't fully caught up with the flat rate, so higher earners may have more withheld than they owe and get the difference back when they file.
- Married couples who both work get a joint filing credit of up to $650, which this calculator leaves out.
- This estimates what you owe, not what's withheld. Withholding follows your W-4 and Ohio's own withholding form, so paychecks can differ a little; the difference comes back as a refund or is due when you file. The W-4 withholding calculator checks the federal side.
Questions people ask
Is Ohio's income tax flat in 2026?
Yes, for 2026 and later: 2.75% on taxable income over $26,050, plus a fixed $332, and nothing on the first $26,050. Before 2026 Ohio also had a higher rate on incomes over $100,000.
Does Ohio tax my 401(k) contributions?
The state doesn't: traditional 401(k) deferrals are excluded from Ohio income tax. City income taxes do apply to them, because they tax wages before deferrals.
How do I find my Ohio city income tax rate?
Use the Ohio Department of Taxation's Finder, which shows the municipal and school district taxes for any address.
