What moved grocery prices
Grocery prices rose 16.3% in 1973 and 14.8% in 1974, around the 1973 OPEC oil embargo. BLS says food price increases spread from grains, livestock and raw milk to finished foods, and the 20.3% food inflation rate of December 1973 was the highest on record. In 2022 grocery prices rose 11.4%: ERS says avian influenza raised egg and poultry prices, while the Russia-Ukraine war and high energy costs also contributed. Increases slowed to 5.0% in 2023 and 1.2% in 2024. Over the year to September 2026 grocery prices rose 1.8%, and ERS's September 2026 outlook forecast a 2.4% rise for 2026.
