How it works

Sales tax = price × rate

Price before tax = total ÷ (1 + rate)

To take tax out of a total, divide rather than subtract: a $107 receipt at 7% is $100 before tax, not $99.51. The calculator fills in each state's average combined state and local rate, but the rate at the register depends on the city and county, so enter your exact rate if you know it.

Worked example

You buy a $100 item in California, where the average combined rate is 9.03%. The tax is $9.03 and you pay $109.03. Going the other way, a $250 receipt at the same rate means the price before tax was $229.29.

Questions people ask

Which states have no sales tax?

Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon have no statewide sales tax. Alaska lets local governments levy one, so you may still pay sales tax in some Alaskan towns.

Can I deduct sales tax on my federal return?

If you itemize, you can deduct either state and local income tax or sales tax, not both. Most people take the standard deduction instead, which the paycheck calculator includes.

Is sales tax charged on everything?

No. Many states exempt or reduce the rate on groceries, prescription drugs or clothing. Check your state's revenue department for what's taxed where you shop.
