What moved car insurance rates
Car insurance rose 17.4% in 2023 and 17.8% in 2024 as yearly averages; measured December to December, BLS reported gains of 20.3% and 11.3%. Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook said in April 2025 that higher vehicle prices could, with a lag, raise costs for services such as insurance and car repair, and BLS notes that premiums in its sample can rise when a newer model costs more to repair. Increases then slowed to 2.8% in 2025, December to December, the smallest in five years. Over the year to September 2026 car insurance fell 5.0%, and BLS reported seasonally adjusted monthly declines in July and August.
